Hobbit - Intensity, from "Two Feet Tall" their debut album, originally recorded in 1983 (the 2nd age) but only released in the late 90's, due to legal problems. US AOR outfit Hobbit were formed in 1977 (the 1st age). The initial line-up included Richard Hill on guitars and keyboards, Rusty Hunnicutt on drums, Paul "Turk" Henry on bass and vocals and Gene Fields on lead vocals and guitars. To quote the liner notes on this excellent album, they" shared common rock and roll influences as well as a powerful attraction to the works of J.R.R.Tolkien" in a style of music they called ''Fantasy Rock". They had a number of hits on East Texas radio and they opened many shows for major acts such as Axe, Cheap Trick, Loverboy and others on nationwide tours. Hunnicutt was later replaced by Keith Young, and it's this line-up that features on the album. There are nods at Journey, Styx and Rock Rose in Hobbit's music, but there's also an element of uniqueness which gives a fresh and different angle to this type of intelligent and extremely well performed AOR music. They're still around today (the 3rd age, with new guitarist Tony Marsh, together with the classic line-up) and a second album, " Through the Looking Glass", is due for release sometime this year. Hobbit (the 4th age) also contributed a stunning version of Thin Lizzy's "Fool's Gold" (originally on" Johnny the Fox") on the double "The Spirit of the Black Rose - A Tribute to Philip Parris Lynott" CD, recently released through Record Heaven Music in Sweden. The album includes a number of well known and not-so-well-known bands. Hobbit is certainly one of the better ones.
